I don’t know anything about websites...

Hey Reader!

I was talking to a friend about a new website yesterday, and she hit me with this:

“I know zero about websites lol”

And I told her exactly what I’m about to tell you... most people don’t. And honestly, that’s not even a problem.

In the simplest context, there are really only three things that make up every website you’ve ever visited. Doesn’t matter if it’s a big corporate site or a one-page portfolio. Same three things.

Here they are:

Domain

The domain is your address on the internet.

It’s the yourname.com part. You register it (usually annually), you own it, and it’s how people find you. Think of it like the address on your house… Kinda.

But I want to emphasize how important it is that YOU OWN this and have it registered under you or your business name - not your assistants, or friends, or anyone else's.

Hosting

Your hosting is where your website files actually live.

Every page, every image, every word on your site is a file sitting on a server somewhere. When someone types your domain into their browser, they arrive at that address, and the internet fetches those files and shows your site.

This is what you’re actually paying for on most platforms, whether you realize it or not. Squarespace, Wix, WordPress.com… that monthly or annual fee? Hosting is a big part of what that covers.

Now, when you are on self-hosted WordPress, you pay for hosting separately because you own those files, and you can choose where they live.

This part is what confuses a lot of people and makes them scared of WordPress, because there seem to be more moving parts at once. But with that, you also have so much more control and can do so much more.

Design

Your design is the part most people jump straight to, and I get it because it’s the most visible part.

But here’s what a lot of people don’t account for when they’re thinking about design... it’s not just how things look.

It’s also your copy (the words on your site), your images, your branding (which incorporates into your words), your colors, your fonts, and how all of that works together to communicate who you are, what you do, and who you do it for.

Design is the whole package, not just a pretty layout.

Now here’s the thing…

If you already knew all of that?

Great!
Bookmark it for the next time someone in your life says, “I know zero about websites lol” and send it their way.

If this was new information?

Even better, because now you have a foundation.

But either way, here’s what I really want you to take away from this:

You don’t have to know everything about websites to have a good one. You just need someone in your corner who does.

Luckily you have a friend who does...

Studio117 Creative is set up to meet you exactly where you are, whether that’s budget, time, or knowledge level. So no matter where you’re starting from, there’s a way for us to work together.

You ALWAYS have options:

If you’ve got a specific problem you’re trying to work through, a strategy call is the move. We’ll dig into what’s going on and figure out the path forward together.

If you have specific services in mind but have questions, or you’re not even sure where to start, a discovery call is your best first step. No pressure, just a real conversation about what you need and what’s possible.

Hit reply and let me know where you’re at, or use the links above to grab a spot on my calendar.

Because whether you know zero about websites or you’re somewhere in between, you’ve got a friend who geeks out over all this stuff. And that’s literally what I’m here for.

P.S. If this sparked questions about domains, hosting, or what I meant by ‘kinda’ when comparing your domain to a house address, hit reply and let me know. And if you want to know why you might actually want the option to move your website (and how easy it all is), say the word. We can make this a whole series.

WordPress7.0 Dropped Here is what you need to know

Hey Reader, I am fresh off a week off celebrating my niece's graduation. And while I was OOO, WordPress dropped a new update. So let's talk about it... Let me start by telling you that every time a major WordPress update drops, I do the same thing. I sit back, grab my coffee, and watch the community lose its minds about it. Because here's the thing... There are always two kinds of WordPress people. The ones who update the second it's available (bless them, truly), and the ones who wait a week...

Hey Reader, This week is geared to my people on WordPress or even those considering WordPress as their website platform. I have something I want you to think about for a second. If you fit in that group I mentioned, you've probably added a plugin to your WordPress site because it solved a problem. It could be a countdown timer, a testimonial slider, or maybe a fancy image gallery. You found it, it had good reviews, it worked, and you moved on. But here's the thing about plugins that most...

Hey Hey Reader, Okay, so I owe you a little honesty today. I've been gone for a couple of weeks... no Tips Tuesday video, no newsletter... and I want to tell you why, because I think there's something in it for you too. If you prefer the video version, here you go 👇🏽 Sometimes life is out here testing you on it. I've talked before about how rest is revolutionary, and how sometimes you just have to accept that you have capacity for 1 million things when your list has 5 million on it. Well....
